April 2001

See below for our April Fool specials...

The beer and tears will be flowing at Speckmann's on April 27 when the revered Church Street restaurant pulls the last keg for its final day of operation. Among those who will be toasting four decades of German cuisine are (from left) teacher and longtime customer Werner Bachmann; Herbie Dizler, who made the first beer delivery in 1962; Margaret Espinoza, who has run the Speckmann's deli for 30 years; restaurant owner Ebby Ullmann, who says, "I'd do it all over again if I could"; and 17-year waitress Irmgard, a.k.a. "Eve the Temptress" (owing to her tray of desserts). Let's all stop by to say auf Wiedersehen. Photo by Beverly Tharp

Church Street is awash in controversy following Muni's launch of a new fleet of submarines, shipped in from Kankankee, Illinois. The neighborhood's seaweed growers are pleased, but many residents are bothered by the constant pinging. Photo by Peg-leg Kennard
