Keep Your Paws Off: Upper Noe Rec Center volunteer Karen Spira cuts the ribbon on a $1,700 canvas sandbox cover designed to thwart late-night feline visits to the playground on Day Street. Spira, a member of the site’s Community Recreation Council, found the special cover, which was then funded by Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center. Supervisor Scott Wiener was on hand June 16 to congratulate Spira and the group. He noted that Eureka Valley Recreation Center had to close its sandbox due to cat problems. Park managers have expressed interest in trying the solution at other city playgrounds, Spira said.     Photo by Sally Smith
