Police Beat

Police Beat is a roundup of crimes and other police incidents in Noe Valley. "Noe Valley" is defined as the area bordered by Grand View, 21st, Fair Oaks, and 30th streets. The following crime summaries were culled from incident reports filed at Mission and Ingleside police stations during September 2004.

Theft: Between 9 and 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 4; 200 block of Fair Oaks Street

A resident reported that she discovered items missing from her unlocked vehicles after accidentally leaving her garage door unlocked. The thief also absconded with a doorknob worth nearly $1,000.

Theft: Between 6:30 and 6:40 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 5; 1400 block of Sanchez Street

A Sanchez Street resident reported that someone entered the gated area surrounding his home and stole his mountain bike. The suspect is unknown.

Burglary: Between 8 and 10 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 5; a restaurant in the 4100 block of 24th Street

The manager of a restaurant on 24th Street reported that an unknown person broke into his office and stole $6,000 in cash during business hours. Nothing else was disturbed.

Theft of Vehicle: 10:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 6; 200 block of Chattanooga Street

A resident of the Mission District reported that her tan and white 1994 Mazda Miata convertible was stolen while parked on Chattanooga Street. She had left a spare set of keys in the car.

Recovered Vehicle: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 8; 3900 block of 26th Street

A 1987 Toyota Camry was recovered by police officers on 26th Street. The car's ignition was damaged.

Theft of Vehicle: Between 1 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 9, and noon, Friday, Sept. 10; 23rd and Noe streets

A Church Street man reported that his white 1986 Saab 900 was stolen from the corner of 23rd and Noe streets. The car bears the California license 1RUN168.

Recovered Vehicle: 2:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 10; 200 block of 30th Street

Police recovered a 1993 Honda motorcycle on 30th Street.

Recovered Vehicle: 4:41 p.m., Friday, Sept. 10; 500 block of 29th Street

A Guerrero Street resident's 1991 Toyota Camry was recovered by police officers on 29th Street.

Theft from Vehicle: Between 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 10, and 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 11; Duncan and Diamond streets

A Duncan Street resident reported that an unknown suspect broke into his 1994 Honda Accord and stole the car stereo. Nothing else was taken and the thief has not been found.

Disturbing the Peace: 6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 12; in front of a record store in the 3900 block of 24th Street

Two men got into an altercation on 24th Street outside a popular record store. One of the men, who appeared to be intoxicated, wanted to engage his dog in a fight with the other man's dog. He also made a scene in the record store and asked a woman inappropriate questions about her clothing. Then he dragged the other man onto the sidewalk. During the scuffle, the allegedly drunk man fell into the record store's window, breaking it. The altercation ended when police arrived. The fighting dog was picked up by Animal Care and Control.

Theft of Vehicle: Between 6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 12, and 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14; Diamond and 23rd streets

A Diamond Street man reported that his red 1998 Honda Civic was stolen from the corner of Diamond and 23rd streets. The vehicle bears the California license 5HHU497.

Suspicious Occurrence: 10:19 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 12; 500 block of Hill Street

A resident reported that someone had moved his window screen aside in an apparent attempt to raise his window. The suspect did not gain entry into the man's apartment.

Attempted Theft of Vehicle: Between 5:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 13, and 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14; 4300 block of 23rd Street

A man reported that the ignition of his 1997 Honda Civic had been damaged in an attempted theft of his car. He also found a screwdriver that did not belong to him in the car. Police booked the screwdriver as evidence, but no suspect has been found.

Theft from Vehicle: Between 11 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14, and 8 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 15; 3900 block of 23rd Street

A 23rd Street resident reported that an unknown person broke into his 2005 Jeep Wrangler, stealing his car stereo and damaging his console and dashboard.

Theft of Vehicle: Between 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 16, and 8 a.m., Friday, Sept. 17; Duncan and Church streets

A maroon 1988 Toyota Camry was reported stolen by a Church Street man. The car bears the California license 2JNU244.

Theft of Vehicle: 7 a.m., Friday, Sept. 17; 700 block of Clipper Street

A Clipper Street man reported that his blue 1992 Nissan Pathfinder was stolen from near his home. The car has a dent on the driver's side fender and bears the Washington license 578HCA.

Attempted Theft of Vehicle: Between 9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 17, and 8 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 18; 1200 block of Sanchez Street

A local woman reported that the ignition of her 1991 Acura sedan had been removed overnight, indicating an attempted theft of the vehicle.

Burglary: Between 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 17, and 8 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 18; 2400 block of Castro Street

An unknown suspect broke into a house under construction and stole a variety of tools, including drills and saws.

Burglary: 3:38 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 18; 4100 block of 25th Street

A video surveillance camera caught two suspects stealing a bicycle from the garage of an apartment building on 25th Street. The video was submitted to the police as evidence, but the suspects have not yet been found.

Attempted Theft of Vehicle: Between 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 19, and 8:15 a.m., Friday, Sept. 24; 200 block of Day Street

A resident of 29th Street reported that someone had attempted to steal his 1996 Olds Cutlass, damaging the ignition.

Theft: 7:15 a.m., Monday, Sept. 20; a coffee shop in the 3900 block of 24th Street

A coffee shop employee reported that an unknown person stole $3 or $4 from the tip jar. The suspect fled on the 48 Muni bus.

Theft of Vehicle: 10 p.m., Monday, Sept. 20; 3800 block of 25th Street

A 25th Street man reported that his burgundy 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass was stolen. The car bears the California license 1JQP443.

Fraudulent Credit Application:
Reported 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 23;
1400 block of Noe Street

A local woman discovered that an unknown person had opened several credit cards in her name, using her personal credit information. The victim had recently given out her Social Security number in an attempt to refinance a loan.

Theft: Between 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 23, and 8:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 24; 28th and Diamond streets

A Diamond Street resident reported that an unknown suspect broke into his 2000 Jeep Cherokee, stealing several tools including a hammer, screw gun, and drill. The vehicle's rear passenger-side window was smashed.

Theft: 12:45 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 25; 1300 block of Sanchez Street

A Castro Street resident said an unknown man robbed her of her purse while she was crossing 27th Street near Sanchez. She and the suspect fled in opposite directions; the victim was not injured.

Theft of Vehicle: 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 25; Chenery and 30th streets

A Chenery Street woman reported that her blue 1991 Mazda 323 was stolen from near her home. The car bears the California license 4XZG071.

Malicious Mischief: Between 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 25, and 6 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 26; 3900 block of Cesar Chavez Street

A local woman reported that the window in the front door of her apartment building had been broken overnight. Nothing else appeared damaged.

Driving While Under the Influence of Alcohol: 9:12 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 26; 4100 block of 21st Street

A resident of 26th Street was pulled over by police on suspicion of drunk driving. The man said he was driving home from a party; he failed all the sobriety tests and was apparently too drunk to take the intoxilyzer (breath) test. The man was booked at Mission Station.

Burglary: Between 9:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 27, and 6:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 28; 300 block of Valley Street

A Valley Street resident reported that someone entered his garage and stole his mountain bike and a box of blank checks. The man said he might have accidentally left the garage open when he returned home the evening before.

Suspicious Occurrence: Between 4 and 4:05 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 28; 1500 block of Dolores Street

A local woman reported that her boyfriend's ex-girlfriend had stalked her and threatened to "mess up your house and your car." The boyfriend was present during the incident.

Burglary: Between midnight and 5:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 28; a bar in the 1600 block of Dolores Street

An unknown person broke into a Dolores Street bar and stole a video poker machine and digital projector. Nothing else was missing. It appeared the thief entered and exited through the bar's front door.

The next Ingleside meeting will be Tuesday, Nov. 16, 7 p.m., at Ingleside Station, 1 Sgt. John Young Lane, off the 2000 block of San Jose Avenue. The next Mission meeting will be Tuesday, Nov. 23, 6 p.m., at Mission Station, 630 Valencia Street near 17th Street.
