Our Savior Gets Shinier: Members of the St. Francis Hook and Ladder Society, along with neighbors and curious joggers-by, re-gild the fire hydrant at 20th and Church Streets (and whatever else might get in the way) in the early morning hours of April 18. The legend goes that water from the Little Fireplug That Could saved the Mission District from destruction in the fire that followed the Great Quake of 1906. While there is disagreement on the accuracy of the legend, this annual event commemorates the spirit of the firefighters who battled that fierce blaze. Photo by Elliot Poger
